I never feel any guilt about it what so ever. I think it is different than physically stealing a record. It is not really stealing. If you make a copy of a car and just take the copy, is it stealing? the person that paid for the car still has the car.

Sometimes, if i really enjoy what I downloaded, I buy it. Most things I download are not worth it.

I wish artist just allowed you to pay what ever you wanted. like radiohead. if you want to pay for the album, you can. if not, oh well.

most of the time, when you buy records, a very small amount goes to the artist anyways.

im not going to be supporting the record labels and the "music business" anymore.

Mixing music and business together just ruins it for me.

If I was better at guitar than what I am and people actually wanted to listen to the music I have created, I would only ask for donations. Just like the guy sitting on the street corner with only a guitar and a tin can.

so i feel no guilt.

Honestly, I have bought many widespread panic albums. I have also downloaded light fuse, get away and did not pay for it. I just had to have the album because I had heard it the night before. I feel I have pitched in and did my part on supporting you all. I only make a little over $7 and hour and I live on my own with lots of bills. It isn't easy for me. I never have any left over money. I only smoke a little pot a couple times a week so I dont waste it on that either.

No guilt here. I really love to just sit back and listen to my "stolen" mp3 files. especially my .flac files.. those sound great.

Thank You for all the great music you have created over the year. If I get extra money in my pocket ill buy light fuse get away lol

I too was a Pink Floyd fan,and Ummagumma was one of my favs,and consequently,was the first great music that i could really have fun listening to Highly stoned:)Queen,Yes and Emmers Lake and Palmer,Led Zep...and of course Pink Floyd were all on my list...Several Species was listened to over and over again...And,Sheer Heart attack by Queen....you brought back some good memories,thanks for the Story,and we will be in as many of the Panic shows as possible(kids n Life:)Give us Some "Conrad"and maybe a shoutout to our son, Cassius "Conrad the Caterpillar" Boxwell ,(yup that is his name)We were honeymoonin at Aspen Music fest 05,and Enjoying a night with WSP,and I had just found out i was Preggars,so Conrad became part of his name...Love you guys!Anytime your at the Greek in Bezerkley(05 Baby!),or Sebastapol Hop Monk(saw you w/the incredible JJ)Or oakland Fox,(last show I saw),or Grand Sierra(didn't make that this year,Funds:(We are always in front and on Schools side,but we love each and every one of ya...You can shout out a Conrad song.,and know we would be honored.That would be RAD!!!!Now I can look back,and add WSP to my list of memories of GREAT Music!!!!

Gary's...now that brings back some memories! They had the first local Asteroids machine. There was always like 20 kids all lining quarters up on the machine waiting to play and the whole time you were checking out albums you'd hear this dun-dun dun-dun dun-dun whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo sound nonstop. I bet it drove the guys who worked there freakin' crazy!!

Dave i was hoping to connect with ya or JB. I was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 High Grade bladder cancer which is now in my bones and brain. Basically i have been told that all they can do is quality of life help now and no medical treatment. I am 35 from KC and obviously this was a blow. I have been a long time WSP fan seeing you guys over 70 times. Even saw you in KC at the Waldo Astoria theater July of 94 with like 300 people stood right in front of ya. I wanted to know how you guys dealt with it when Houser was going through his cancer and what you liked that he did and what you wish he would have done. Hopefully you don't mind getting in touch with me. Thanks man. Kevin

Dave, Although I've never stolen any music in my time, I was a baseball card thief when I was a preteen. I think everyone has some sort of gluttony in thier lifetime. This blog will definitely take everyone back to those times. Although the satisfaction of having the baseball cards was unimaginable at the time it has since vanished. Replaced with new passsions. Although I was not born in the great Rock n' Roll era of the 60's and 70's, I believe I have heard and seen some of the greatest musicians ever to walk this planet. Thank you for all of the music that you have brought to my life and for all the memories that have come along with it. I'll see you guys in Louisville ready to etch more into an ever growing tree.

i am a bit younger but also had similar experiences. in the late 80's early 90's i too stole music, but from k-mart. my first time was motley crue-girls... and def leppard/hysteria. i too had guilt but not for YEARS later. better late than never i guess. cheers.

Thanks man, I ripped off Led Zeppelin's House's of The Holy from K-Mart when I was a teenager, I was terrified as I walked out, almost started to run. I kept my cool and to this day, have never been brought to justice. Thanks for sharing. I hope you write your own bio one day, we all would love to read it. Love your music.

Nice. Great Blog. Very, very well written. That is too funny. Being a child of the eighties, we stole tapes. I stole my very first tape...Zeppelin I. My parents wouldn't let me buy it because they were Satan Worshippers. Yep. So, I stole it. Every single time I listen to that album I have a flashback similar to Dave's experience...Kudos. I am sure every real fan of music has a similar experience...way to capture the experience, and put a smile on my face at the same time....

Curious what your thoughts were on the home taping debate during the early 80's, and whether you would consider someone dubbing a copy on their tape deck to be stealing as well. Also, I think it's unfair for the artist to play the victim role when you consider that out of the $15 I pay for a cd, about a dollar of that goes to the artist. I have no ethical qualms about bypassing a greedy, corrupt, rip-off record industry that treats its artists & customers with an attitude that borders on contempt (I'm glad Mr. Schools feels pride in continuing to purchase "every conceivable repackaging of Dark Side of The Moon they've issued over the years," but I'm personally fed up with buying the same songs over & over again). If there was a way to send a dollar (or two, or five, etc.) directly to the artist, I think most fans would like to as well (as we've seen proven with Radiohead & Wilco's "donation download" models).

And writing this as someone in their mid-30's who both illegally downloads, as well as continues to buy, a considerable amount of music, I have found that illegal downloading has given me the opportunity to significantly broaden my music experience by giving me access to areas like free jazz, avant-garde electronicisms, etc., that in the past I would have been (and continue to be) too poor to buy. There is nothing more disappointing that forking over $10-$20 to take a chance on something and end up being disappointed. The high price of music results in safe, more conservative purchases from the cash-strapped fan. And I think due to file sharing we are going to continue to see an incredible "eclecticizing" of music over the next few years, as previously difficult-to-find music becomes possible to find with a click of a button.

For example, did you know that Geffen owns the rights to The Raincoats first two albums, which is out of print & unavailable on itunes, and refuses to license it to another label? Without file-sharing, music listeners would be unable to hear them unless they were lucky enough to stumble across it in a used bin.

I share Mr. School's fondness for record buying, but I find his take on illegal downloads to be overly simplistic and not show a whole lot of thought on the subject.

The last time I checked, you couldn't download tickets to a show. So anyone making music still can sell tickets and perform for $$$.
